Who is Amos?

Much of the Book of Amos probably originates from the eighth-century prophet Amos himself, although it is likely that other authors were involved and the final compilation may have taken place at a later date.

The first section concerns God's judgement on the Gentile nations; Amos next turns to the sins of Israel and calls on the people to repent.  The prophet then describes five different visions that God has sent him, each symbolising judgement.  The book ends with a promise of restoration.  Amos' message is notable for its stress on righteousness, in both a spiritual and a social context.  He denounces the empty religious ritual of his day and in strong terms condemns the oppression of the poor by the wealthy.
