Year Nine Society and Environment: ORAL PRESENTATION
Australian Colonial History:
The history of Australia was forged from blood, sweat and tears. Many events and periods and people from the colonial period (1788-1901) helped to make our country what it is today. This assignment will help us to understand and evaluate how significant periods in Australian history have helped shape our country and society.
In order to complete the following tasks, you will be assigned topics to research based on an historical theme in Australian colonial history. Some of them may be more difficult to research than others, so consider carefully. Consult the rubric and use it to decide which topic may be best in achieving the result you are aiming for.
Themes and Topics
Aboriginal/white CONTACT
Gov. Macquarie; Bennelong; James Stirling; Yagan; Jandamarra; John Septimus-Roe; the Pinjarra Massacre; the Myall Creek Massacre; the ‘Stolen Generation’; the Tasmanian Aborigines
CONVICTS
The Catalpa rescue, Francis Greenway, Mary Wade, Port Arthur, Macquarie Harbour, Captain Hendersson
GOLD RUSH
Edward Hargreaves; Paddy Hannan; the Lambing Flat race riot; the completion of the Perth to Kalgoorlie pipeline; Cobb and Co.
EXPLORATION, WOOL and the BUSH MYTH
Early Exploration – Burke and Wills; Edward John Eyre; Alexander Forrest; Lawson, Blaxland and Wentworth; John Macarthur and the Merino; Banjo Patterson; Henry Lawson; the Heidelberg School
BUSHRANGERS
Moondyne Joe; The Kelly Gang; Ben Hall; Dan Morgan; Captain Thunderbolt (Fred Ward); Captain Moonlight (Andrew Scott)
FEDERATION
The WA referendum; Australia’s first parliament; Henry Parkes; Edmund Barton; John Forrest
PART A: Research
After researching your chosen time period, you will need to decide upon one of the significant events/people. Your first task is research the event/life, looking in particular for the historical causes, nature and consequences relevant to the event/life. This will need to involve proper note-taking and referencing, completed on the attached sheets, and handed in at the time of your presentation. (add more paper if you wish)
PART B: Creating an Historical Artefact
Your second task is to come up with an idea for an important artefact that would best illustrate the specific event/person you have elected to research.
For example:
Time/theme: Modern period, 1990 – 2011
Significant event: Sydney Olympics,
Artefact: Torch, Model of Sydney Homebush Stadium, Cathy Freeman’s space suit
Your artefact may be a poster diagram, a three dimensional map, a flag, a weapon, a model person or building, or anything else that relates to your event and could help you in your oral presentation. The more creative and detailed your artefact is, the more useful it will be in your presentation.
The more you have put into the construction of the artefact, the more impressive it will be for your audience. Pre-constructed or shop-bought models will not impress your marker as much as individual, original work.
As the artefacts will be stored in the classroom, the size of the artefact is extremely important. The artefact must fit into your lower section of your locker, and realistically fit into a large shoebox.
PART C: 4-7 MINUTE ORAL PRESENTATION
You will be expected to present your event/person to the class, using your artefact. All class members with topics relevant to your theme will present on the same day. During your 4-7 minute individual oral presentation you will need to include the following:
(In particular, look for influences on people, government, the economy, the environment, attitudes and Australian identity)
Due Wednesday Week 9 (30th March)
Oral Presentations will be concluded in Week 10 if necessary.
